Home visits...part of what Peru's Challenge does for the community in Pumamarca. We visit different families up in Pumamarca, paying attention to the ones which may have domestic issues. A qualified social worker (Iris) works alongside us, and she has good knowledge of the the different families and potential problems. Common domestic issues are domestic violence and child abuse, which are usually the result of alcohol abuse. Not many volunteers enjoy home visits as it can be a very confronting and raw experience. For example, last week the social worker has to remove 3 children from their alcoholic parents on the spot. The volunteers witnessed the mother running after one of the children with a plank of wood and throwing stones at him. This is not the first time complaints have been received regarding physical abuse in this family. Peru's Challenge has to step in to arrange accommodation for the 3 children, supplying necessities such as kitchenwares and food. The schooling of these kids are also sponsored by Peru's Challenge.
