It has started again... After what happened to many in the first week that we arrived in Cusco, we have been extremely careful with our water and food. For Team March, only 4 people did not have stomach bugs and we are thankful that both of us are the 2 out of the 4 fortunate ones. Team April arrived between April 4-6 and appeared to do better than Team March in the first few days. However, it's not looking great now... Seven freshies went down with some sort of bugs... a combination of cold virus, salmonella and parasites. Last night was quite an experience for a number of us. Most people have gone out for dinner/drinks except 7 of us (two won't feeling too well and the rest of us from the our apartment decided to share homemade pizza and have a quiet evening together). One of the girls came back from dinner fairly early looking very ill and could hardly stand on her feet. She had very bad cramps and was shivering, crying and screaming. We fumbled around trying to call the doctor and after great difficulty, we finally got through (still cannot figure out why the phone only works at times). It was a terrible half an hour wait for the doctor as she was in great pain and discomfortable, at times with her eyes rolled back. Relief swept through the house when the doctor finally arrived at the house. She was admitted to the hospital immediately with suspected advanced salmonella and parasite infection. Not a nice or quiet evening at all. All seven of us had to disinfect ourselves but no water was available (Remember??? The water cuts off regularly at night). We had a bad night but were glad to find out that she is doing much better now.
